Skills you need to develop to become fluent in a second language
Skills are needed in all activities. If you want to swim or drive a car, you need swimming or driving skills.
What skills are needed to become fluent in a second language?
There are four basic skills:
- Reading.
Knowing the alphabet and words does not guarantee success in reading.
Look at a child. He may speak fluently, know all the letters, and plenty of words, but he can't read.
Or, sometimes he would read, but it does not mean that he would understand what he is reading.
Sometimes, to understand the meaning, a child needs to go over the sentence again and again.
Remember your experience at school. How often, after reading a sentence aloud for the teacher,
you would stop to read it again in order to understand the meaning and give the right translation?
It's out mnemonic skill (or visual memory), which would allow us to grasp the meaning of the below sentence:
Mnemanic allows su to undestan the meening of thus sentense.
- Listening comprehension.
The challenges here are to be able to match the graphic and the sound patters of the words,
grasp the word quickly to be able to follow the speaker, identify the word pronounced with a variety of accents.
Words in a phrase are reduced and merged. This is why even if we can identify a sound pattern of a stand-alone word,
we may fail to recognize it in an utterance.
Here, as in the above example, we also need mnemonic skill, but in this case, we use our acoustic memory.
- Speaking (Verbal Skills).
When we speak, we have to put our though into words instantaneously (no time to use a dictionary).
Do you remember a case, when you could not recollect an English word?
This is the consequence of learning the words through translation by means of using an English-Russian dictionary.
A more effective way is to understand the word in the context of the English phrase.
- Writing.
We can write due to our mnemonic.
The more you read, the more words are captured by our visual memory,
the easier it is to remember them in the process of writing.
Mnemonic helps with the spelling challenges too!

Use the parallel Russian text only is case you get stuck.
Remember, that using an English-Russian dictionary leads you to learning English-Russian language.
Read texts that interest you. If you are captivated by the text, the reading will go faster and give pleasure.
-
If you are doing the first point, support it with listening English.
Even if you don't understand a word - go on listening.
Soon your brain will start matching the visual and the acoustic images of the words, and you will start recognizing them while hearing.
Listening to speech of different people, you will learn to understand a variety of accents.
What to listen to? Satellite television news is a good source.
It provides real-life, updated information, and the quality of the language is high.
To enable yourself to listen more and to be able to concentrate, it would be a good idea to purchase cordless headphones.
- If you are doing the first two things, repeat aloud the material you read and hear.
Try to use it when you want to express your own idea in English.
You can do this on your way home, or when doing non-intellectual work, or while waiting.
-
Just write down what you read or hear. You can make this process useful,
if you jot down things you want to remember: quotations, bright ideas, useful phrases, etc.
